Introduction Curvin McCabe Elementary School is located in Pawtucket, Rhode Island and is one of ten wonderful elementary schools in the Pawtucket school district. Pawtucket is a city of 72,958 and was found in 1671. It is about twelve minutes driving distance from Providence Rhode Island. Curvin McCabe Elementary serves 430 students in grades K-6. The principal is Gina Grossi and the clerk is Debra Kelly. All the teachers are certified which means that the students will get the best education possible. Curvin McCabe is very hands on with their students, there is always an interactive activity taking place in the school. Also, one of the teachers at Curvin McCabe took on the task of revamping the schools website. Every teacher will have their very own homepage which parents can look and see what their children are up to. The schools goal is to eventually teach the children how to edit and manage the website by themselves. Aside from the website, the sixth graders are involved in a project that they get the opportunity to create and design a toy template for a upstart toy company.
Community Background Pawtucket is a city in Providence County, Rhode Island. The population is 71,148 and is the fourth largest city in the state. Pawtucket is known for being the major contributor of cotton textiles during the American Industrial Revolution. Slater Mill was the first fully mechanized cotton spinning mill in America. It was built in 1793 by Samuel Slater on the Black River Falls in downtown Pawtucket. Pawtucket was also known for being the center for textiles, iron works and other products. The textile business in New England failed during the Great Depression due to manufacturers closing or moving their services South where they can run their operations and labor for low cost. Even after all the struggles with the economy, Pawtucket today still produces goods such as lace, non woven and elastic woven materials, jewelry, silverware, metals and textiles. Hasbro a large manufacturer for toys and games, is headquartered in Pawtucket. Originally, there were two Pawtucket’s. One West. Pawtucket and one East Pawtucket. West was by the Blackstone River, which used to be part of North Providence while East was by the Blackstone River, which originally settled as part of the Massachusetts town of Rehoboth. Once East Pawtucket was relocated to Rhode Island in the 1860s, both East and West merged into one. It was later incorporated as a city. The median household income for Pawtucket is 41,382 while Rhode Island's is 42,090. The median family income for Pawtucket is 49,089 and Rhode Island's is 52,781. The per capita for Pawtucket and Rhode Island is almost the same, Pawtucket comes in at 21,957 and Rhode Island comes in at 21,688. Pawtucket has no families or individuals that are below poverty level, however Rhode Island does. They have 23,608 families and 120,548 individuals. The city of Pawtucket obtains 49,346 White citizens, 11,064 Black/African Americans, 1,518 Asians, 11,512 Hispanics and 206 American Indian/Alaska Natives.
